Behind the Scenes

We are in what I call the “doldrums” of the year. The holidays are over, spring has not arrived yet, and around here in the North there is only snow, ice, and drab landscapes. There’s nothing much going on, at least on the calendar. But there is a flipside to the doldrums – movement that happens “behind the scenes” where we’re not aware of it.

We all know that the world we live in has a bazillion moving pieces. Every one of us is thinking, moving, and wanting things all the time. As we go about our lives talking with people, doing small things for people, and taking care of business, we are planting seeds. Those seeds are infused with our energy and intention. One relationship can lead to other relationships. Our small actions in our business can start larger chains of events. Every step can have an effect. And as we sow, so shall we reap…

Every gardener knows that seeds take time to germinate. Each seed has its own schedule. We don’t plant a seed and dig it up every morning to see if it’s started to grow. We trust that the seed will do what it’s supposed to do exactly when it’s supposed to do it.

In the same way, even when we don’t physically see results from what we’re doing, things can be happening behind the scenes. We can’t see what’s going on in the lives of those we touch. We have to trust that things are happening for us even though they are not physically visible, or when it seems that nothing is changing and we are standing still.
