The Right Way
Sep 28, 2021When we were children, we were taught the “right way” to do things. Out parents taught us how to do things the way that they were taught, and that became the “right way”. They may not have liked it if we did things a different way. Our teachers taught us the “right way” to solve math problems and the “right way” to behave. In school, if you made a mistake or did something the “wrong” way, there were unpleasant consequences. You got an “F” on a test, or you took a trip to the principal’s office.
I absorbed the concept of the “right way”. I did what the people around me would have called the “right” things, until I found myself in a marriage that was wrong for me. And then I argued with myself for a while about what would be the “right” thing to do…
… and came to the conclusion that there is no “right” way.
In most of life “right” is a point of view. “Right” is an opinion. I have been afraid to move forward many times because I was not sure it was the “right” choice. I assumed there was only ONE “right” choice to get to the only ONE “right” destination. Now I know there are a whole variety of destinations that could make you happy and contented.
People get married because they think it’s the right thing to do. Later they may get a divorce because they think it’s the right thing to do, and their next relationship is wonderful.
People take a job that’s the right fit for them, but the atmosphere is toxic, so they quit and find a job in a completely different field that makes them want to go in on the weekends.
So now I try to make the “right” choice from the point of view that I have at the moment, and trust that things will turn out in the end. One choice at a time…
What do you think? Have you been paralyzed trying to figure out what the “right” way is? Did you take what you thought was the “right” way, which turned out to be “wrong”, and then went back to “right”? Leave a comment!
Until next time, remember… We are all magnificent.
